Noelia Garcia Carmona is a Flamenco & contemporary dancer, choreographer & teacher. She formally discovered this joy of movement at the age of 4 & her passion for physical expression & an instinctive curiosity have led her from a Mediterranean coastal city in the province of Barcelona, Spain, to Memphis, TN, her adopted home. She has performed globally & though she actively explores free-form, contemporary movements, Noelia cannot hide her origin even if she tried. She embodies the quintessential Iberian, & all the dreams & paradoxes represented therein. From the conflicts & mournings of the inhabitants of this great Peninsula, Flamenco & Noelia were born & continue to develop. Arab, Christian, Pagan, African, Barbarian, Greek & Roman contributions & opposing energies all intertwined to lay Its foundation, & the lingering spirits of these contradictory heritages continue to yield a defiant & proud response from any artistic attempt to interpret & define the forces that drive Flamenco. Flamenco is manifest in the vigorous floor-stomping & graceful arm motions of its dancers, the minor keys strummed by its guitarists, the trancelike wailing of its singers, the active participation by its audience & the oft-present accompaniment of precise "palmas", castanets or "cajas". Flamenco also insists on simple, poetic lyrics. This is a key element & might indeed help the right kind of person to escape modern-day complexities that have the potential to convolute minds, diminish the basic instincts of the human race & generally overwhelm folks. Noelia is Catalan & has lived & worked in Barcelona & Madrid (Spain), & performed throughout Europe, in China, Israel & the Phillippines. She trained intensively for 7 years at the Institut del Teatre de la Diputacio de Barcelona. Noelia is a founding member of Increpacion Danza & was asked by Cirque Du Soleil to become a cast member of Zumanity, which premiered in Las Vegas during late 2003. |

Flamenco dance is a strong, defiant, explosive & masculine expression. "...Carmona's
eyes smolder, and she starts clicking her heels against the floor.
There are no signs of fear or trepidation. 'This is a passionate thing,'
she says. 'You can't put a wall between you and the audience. You
have to be free and expressive.' " (01/27/05 Memphis Flyer article by
